Hitch is rated for Maximum Load of 500lbs, Maximum Tongue Weight of 75lbs.
Bushtec recommends that trailer weight never exceed 1/3 of ladden weight of Motorcycle or approximately 400lbs for the Honda GL1800.
Brakes are not an answer to overloading, and should only be considered for added peace of mind.
Honda can limit Warrantee coverage based on existance of hitch, but defacto still handles frame recall issues (as reported in user conferences).
